History
In 1966, Mangalore, Karnataka, was a growing city, with increasing need for workers. Also, the Jesuits were trying to realize their preferential option for the poor. St. Aloysius College was given permission by the University of Mysore to start to an evening college providing courses in the faculties of Arts and Commerce, at the pre-university level. This allowed those who were short of funds to finish their education while working. Applications reached 200 for the 160 seats available in the first year.
In 1967 the evening division was opened to women and also began offering the bachelors in arts (B.A.) and in commerce (B.Com.). For lack of facilities these two courses took new students on alternate years, but with high demand for the courses both initiated classes yearly after 1971.
In 2016 St. Aloysius Evening College celebrated its Golden Jubilee Year (1966-2016), recalling the nearly 25,000 students who had attended the three-hour night school after a full day's work. In 2011 the College had been reaccredited by NAAC with a B grade and in 2013 it initiated the Masters in Commerce (M.Com.). It currently offers also the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Business Management (B.B.M.), and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.), as well as a Diploma in Investment Management (DIM) and a Certificate Course in Photography (CCP).
